Crowns

We may recommend a crown to treat a tooth that has been damaged due to decay, injury, or in some cases by a leaking filling. They are also often used in conjunction with another treatment, such as a root canal treatment or bridge. This is to help ensure that full function is returned to the tooth and to help protect it from any further damage.

As the name suggests, a crown protects the tooth by acting as a kind of ‘cap’. Often made of a material such as porcelain, or Zirconia, they can also be made of a precious metals such as gold. These tend to be much more noticeable in the mouth. Porcelain is one of the most popular choices when it comes to crowns – especially when being fixed towards the front of the mouth. This is because as a material it is able to very closely mimic the shade, shape, and even surface of a natural tooth and provides the most natural-looking finish.

If we recommend a crown treatment to you, then it will normally occur over two appointments. At the first appointment, we’ll take an impression or digital image of the tooth, and also remove any decayed or damaged parts. We’ll then fit you with a temporary crown that you will wear until your own unique crown is ready to be fitted.

The wait between appointments is normally around two weeks, during which your crown will be made for you at a dental laboratory. Once ready, you’ll return to us here at SnapeHill Dental Studio where our experienced team will carefully and professionally apply your crown.
